Hans J. Wegner, who is best known for his chairs, also experimented with light and lamp designs, which resulted in The Pendant in 1962 and the Opala Series from 1973, both of which Carl Hansen & Son is now adding to its collection. At the same time, the world-renowned sculptor and designer Henning Koppel is being welcomed with his Bubi lamp from 1972. Carl Hansen & Son is thus continuing its vision of gathering the most important design icons under one roof.
Knud Erik Hansen, CEO and third generation owner-manager of Carl Hansen & Son, says: “The interplay between furniture and lighting is an incredibly important part of any interior, and places considerable demands on a lamp’s design and functionality. For several years, we have expanded our collection so that it’s possible to decorate an entire home with Carl Hansen & Son. We are therefore extremely pleased to welcome The Pendant, the Opala Series and the Bubi Lamp to the collection, as they have an aesthetic synergy with our existing furniture designs.”
The Pendant
The Pendant was designed by Hans J. Wegner in 1962 and has been in production ever since. The lamp combines soft shapes with an industrial design in a straightforward construction, where the functional handles also serve as decorative details. The lamp’s hanger, which holds the shade and socket housing together, also acts as a handle that makes it possible to adjust the pendant without touching the lampshade. The light source can also be adjusted up and down, so the lamp can be placed high or low without causing glare, making it an obvious choice for dining, conference and coffee tables.
Opala
The Opala Series, designed by Hans J. Wegner in 1973, has a distinctive, futuristic look with its large, circular, slightly angled shade. The concept behind the lampshade is that the same mould can be used to make the shades for both the floor and table lamps. It is only the way in which the lampshade is cut that determines which model it fits. The pendant shade is symmetrically cut, while the shades for the table and floor lamps are cut asymmetrically. This functional approach supports a more efficient production as well as minimising resource consumption, which was as much a requirement when the lamp was designed in 1973 as it is today. The Opala Series has a focused work light while also providing soft ambient illumination through the opal acrylic. It is ideal for offices, hotels, public spaces and private homes.
Bubi
The Bubi Lamp is an excellent example of Henning Koppel’s sculptural and playful design idiom. Koppel designed the lamp in 1972, inspired by his grandchild’s summer hat. The lamp shade is created in an organic, teardrop shape made of opal acrylic fitted to a chrome or brass-plated top. Koppel was a trained sculptor, and above all took an artistic approach to his designs. Unlike many of his contemporary colleagues in the Danish Modern movement, Koppel gave more priority to the design idiom rather than functionality, and his curved line is recognisable in all his work, from silverware and jewellery to flatware, furniture and lamps. The Bubi Lamp produces glare-free illumination and is suitable as a pendant or positioned on its side as a table or floor lamp.
